Key West Beaches

The island of Key West is situated in the Florida Keys. It is a popular tourist destination, and the area uses numerous bridges to connect the islands. The city is the most southern city in the nation. It is home to endangered species, Civil War forts, coral reefs and beautiful beaches. You cannot explore the area without exploring one of the spectacular beaches.

South Beach

A pier and a hotel sit amid this southernmost beach in the continental portion of the country. One of the most common things to do in the area is to walk 1.2 miles from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. After walking this mile, you can enjoy wading into the shallow waters of this beach to cool off from the heat. The beach permits you to rent a chair, or you can just relax on the white sand. There is a restaurant at the beach where you can get a cold drink or satisfy your hunger. It is a small beach, but it is a great place to relax and unwind.

Fort Zachary Taylor Beach

This great beach is a part of a state park, so you will be required to pay a fee to enter the beach. While visiting this beach, you can enjoy swimming, snorkeling or fishing. You can also have a picnic at the beach. The water is deeper at this beach than the other beaches in the city, and it is located where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Atlantic Ocean. During some times of the year, you can participate in Yoga on the beach. A bicycle trail is also available, and you can enjoy scuba diving. You can rent snorkeling equipment, chairs or umbrellas. You can also find places to grab a snack or a drink.

Smathers Beach

Situated west of the airport, this beach was named after one of the former governors. It is two miles long, and it is considered the largest beach in the city. It is a great beach for families to visit. Some of the activities include volleyball and snorkeling. Vending trucks allow you to purchase snacks, drinks, rafts and chairs. The beach contains parking, restrooms and picnic locations.

Bahia Honda State Park

This state park covers more than 500 acres and offers a quiet place to visit. Snorkeling is one of the most popular activities to do at the beach. While snorkeling, you can see one of the most stunning coral reefs in the Keys. Snorkeling tours are available. You can enjoy one and a half hours of exploring the amazing reef, and snorkeling equipment is available. While on a snorkeling tour, you will probably get the opportunity to see a nurse shark. Another great way to explore the waters is by kayaking as you can take a kayaking tour. You can also take a bicycle tour, or you can swim in the Atlantic Ocean and Florida Bay. Tarpon fishing is also a popular activity. In addition, you can visit the gift shop to purchase a souvenir, and you can buy pizza, sandwiches or ice cream at the snack bar. Showers and changing areas are available, and pets are permitted in camping areas. This awesome beach is considered one of the best in the country.

Dry Tortugas Beach

This stunning beach is home to stunning natural beauty. You can bask in the sun, or you can enjoy snorkeling, kayaking, fishing or swimming. While at the beach, you can view unique bird species, and campgrounds are available for you to enjoy your stay.

Dog Beach

If you have a dog, you must take your pet to Dog Beach. You can just sit back and relax while your dog frolics and plays on the beach. This is the only beach in Key West where dogs are permitted in the water. Your pet will love you.
