When you think of Key West and the Florida Keys, you might imagine sipping a Colada from a hollowed out coconut, as you relax in the sun and watch the waves crash against the miles and miles of white, sandy beaches.

The most famous event of the year in Key West Florida is October's Fantasy Fest. Some know it as Key West's version of Mardi Gras, but anyone who has attended Fantasy Fest knows that this festival is completely its own entity. Events begin with the Goombay Festival, a celebration of the tastes and sounds of Caribbean culture that takes place in the Bahama village of Key West. Events take place all week long including the Dungeon of Dark Secrets and Fetish party on Monday, the Headdress Ball on Tuesday, and the Celebrity Look-a-Like contest. Things really start to get rowdy on Thursday with events culminating in the Captain Morgan Fantasy Fest Parade on Saturday.

Henry Flagler, a wealthy businessman who created the Standard Oil Company in 1870 with John Rockefeller, had a dream to connect mainland Florida with the isolated port of Key West. He envisioned that the shipping industry in Key West would grow tremendously with the opening of the Panama Canal.

Key West, Florida, is quite certainly a popular place for people to live and to visit. After all, the area is known for having terrific weather and being a prime location to soak of the sun and to relax.
